Important to read at first:

After 44 years - on 18th.09.2014 - I decided to stop my researches on: "How were all continents discovered 1885-2014 by motorcycle-travellers?" The reason is that I have been sitting with all my passion behind the computers and reading books and articles for years day and night to come to the knowledge of these sites.
I am still full of other ideas including some travels. Also I want to move a bit more for my health instead of sitting too long behind the computer.

You can use all information for yourself. If you use infos and fotos for any other reason like publications please know, that there is still Copyright on all of it by myself and others.

I am German. I did my best to write most in English. If I missed some ,,,,,,,,, please take some of these and put them on the right place (Churchill)!

Tesch Neuseeland- und Australien-Reise:

Suche Neuseeland und Australien-Infos von Kennern dort.

Mein Sohn Min Tesch möchte mit seiner Frau und ihren zwei Jungs zwei Monate Neuseeland bereisen. Anschließend drei Wochen individuell in Australien reisen.

First list in Internet about "Australia-Motorcycle-Travels". A part of this you find already published since 02.1998. (>http://www.berndtesch.de >NEWS).  Start of this list in Internet: 28.05.2000 (>http://www.berndtesch.de >Englisch or German version>countries or Staaten>Australia). I would be grateful if you could help to keep this update ! So far you find many language and grammar mistakes inside because of lack of time. Pardon. Will be corrected and updated with more travellers in future.

Bernd Tesch has been travelling in Australia / Tasmania 14.000 kms until 2000 himself. But much more important is that he knows a lot of Australia-Motorcycle-Travellers himself. He is working in this field since 1970. In this times I had to write letters and to phone or to visit the World-Around-Travellers to get contact / informations. Later Fax helped. In 1991 I visited the most famous motorcycle-travellers in Denmark, in 1993 in Britain, in 1994 in USA, in 1999/ 2000 in Australia and in between many in Europe (France, Germany, Netherland, Switzerland). Many of  famous Australia Motorcycle Travellers have been at my yearly Motorcycle-Meeting for World-Travellers in april yearly. I own the largest archive of  oveland to Australia-Travellers and Around Australia Travellers. Especially I am as well best  informed the history: "Discovering Australia by Motorcycle in 100 years 1900 -2000". In 2000 Bernd Tesch is preparing an article about this. In 02.1998 I started in internet to publish informations about Motorcycle-World-Travellers

To find all this and all my activities was a "life-long job" and cost me a lot of money. Since many years I am working in a two new book called "Australien-Motorrad-Reisen = Australia Motorcycle Travels" and "Australien Motorrad Abenteuer" = Australia Motorcycle Adventures. Nearly all books about "Australia by Motorcycle" which have been published until 1994 are published in my in German written, but very international understandable book called "Motorrad-Abenteuer-Touren" (432 pp, 500 pictures / drawings. About 264 Motorcyle World-Tours. ISBN 3-9800099-55-5. DM 38.90). I own all this books in all languages.

I am very grateful to all the individuals who knew that I am working in this field. They informed me worldwide by sending letters, later faxes and emails since 1994 about World-Around-Travellers. Without their help I could not get to this level. This internet-list had to be done very quick, because I did not have enough time. So please give me your "pardon" that there are mistakes inside of the informations and a lot in my language. At least you will never have seen such a huge collection of informations.

If there is shown "Book:" under the traveller and you want to read / order this you can check if it is still available: >> http://www.berndtesch.de >> German or English version >> Bestelliste or order. If you find this book there you can order it. I offer about 183 international available Motorcycle-TRAVEL-Books for sale.

If you are a Australia-Motorcycle-Traveller or plan to do this or "on the road" already or know anyone who is not listed here, please send my any details, addresses, publications, homepages and most important: best pictures.

PLEASE give me at first a complete view like this EXAMPLE in this STILE in English:

How to organise a flight to Australia easy and cheaply??

EMIRATES Airlines www.emirates.de geflogen.

How to organise a flight to and a bike in Australia easy and cheaply together??

Kurt Weidner   BIKE TOURS AUSTRALIA   http://www.biketours.com.au Kurt Weidner is not the owner anymore.
Australia +  USA +  Canada    Organised Tours + Buyback (Mietkauf) + Rental (Verleih)
The German Kurt offered as the first firm since 1982 organised Motorcycle-Tours in Australia. In the meantime you can book organised Motorcyle- Tours in Australia, USA and Canada, rent / buy / buyback motorcycles / cars. His firm name worldwide is BIKE TOURS AUSTRALIA. In Germany the same firm is known as TRAVEL ACTION as well. You can get more information about mc-tours by his homepage  http://www.biketours.com.au  You can order prospects of his tours by email in Germany: travelaction@t-online.de In Australia:  bike@biketours.com.au  or  car@carconnection.com.au  Address: TRAVEL ACTION Kurt Weidner. Einsiedeleiweg 16. D-57399 Kirchhunden. Tel. 02764-7824. Fax: 02764-7938. The Dutch woman Evelyn speaks German, English and Dutch.

Kurt owned up to 50 Motorcycles YAMAHA XT 600 E in Australia. Each months they start an organised mc-tour for three weeks. One enduro-tour is five weeks. The areas in Australia are different concerning to the climate. In total they ride eight different routes. As well the difficulties are from just hard-road-tours to expeditions. This camping-tours are accompanied by a leader in a service-car, who takes your luggage and buys the food.  Normally this is always smiling and very experienced Hardy. If you have friends who would not like to ride a mc (sometimes women like this) but accompany you there are always two seats available in the leader-car. Minimum for each tour are three motorcycles, maximum are about 10 normally. "On the road" you can go yourself with your own speed or in a small group and the car will come behind you and meet you in the evening. So in reality you have a lot of freedom as if you would travel alone. They could organise the flight with Quantas or Singapure-Airlines for you as well. Flight costs depend on the season and are about DM 2000 to DM 2300 both ways. Because of the season in Australia most customers book tours between october and march.

As well interested for you is that Kurt offers bikes and cars for your individual tour as well. For short tours he asks for one XT 600 E  $ Au 65/day or only $ Au 1950 as long as six months (1 $ Au is about DM 1,06). This is extremly sheap, because one flight with your own motorcycle will cost you more than to rent his motorcycle up to six month.  You can get more informations about how to rent a bike for yourself:  homepage: http://www.carconnection.com.au

The reason that inform you about Kurts firm so detailed is that we help each other: Kurt offered in 18.08.98 Bernd Tesch and Patricia Govers two YAMAHA XT 600 E for our  Round-Australia / Tasmania tour 25.10.1999 - 26.01.2000. We had no problems with both YAMAHA XT 600 E. I think that these are very good bikes for Autralia. You can ride with comfort on the long sealed road and are able to ride off-road everywhere. If you would have any problems with the bikes you can call his firm by Tel and handy. Seeing personally his firm we liked very much his and Hardys personal handling of his customers. So you are very well "personally protected" during your trip.

If you want to travel by mc / car in Australia with an organised tour or as an individualist I can recommed his firm very well. Especially if you just have 2-6 weeks holiday do NOT bring your own bike to Australia. You will save a lot of trouble here and in Australia organising all this AND will save a lot of money. Just relax: Fly to Australia (Melbourne), get your bike there, have fun riding in Australia, return the bike and fly back. All together very easy and cheap.

How to ship a travel by bike from Australia to NZ or GB or the other way?
If you can arrange to ship your bike in special times of David this probaly will help you to save a lot of money!
David Milligan. Boss of firm Superbike & Grand Prix World Tours. Event Specialists Exclusively for Motorcyclists the Aussie & NZ Isle of Man TT Festival specialists & Bike Shippers to NZ & UK/Europe. David started in 1996 to take Australian motorcyclists to World Superbike and MotoGP race meetings in Europe. But now it has been evolved into a business which ships (by shipping container) Australian registered motorcycles for their owners to go touring in New Zealand and the UK/Europe. We put 20 bikes in one container and unload them at our destination (Christchurch in New Zealand and Ipswich in England) so our clients can go touring for 1 month in New Zealand during the southern summer and 3 months in UK/Europe during the northern summer. We also take 1 tour each year with clients (on their bikes shipped to England) which includes England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man (for the TT Festival). This tour is for 43 days and all accommodation (B&B) is included.

Cathrin Altenbach (German. *01.1981)
+ Australia. Cathrin planned to travel by motorcycle one year in Australia. But she lived and travelled there 16 months.
Purpose: Cathrin bought -as planned- in Albany in Australia a used SUZUKI DR 650 from a private person and registerd and insured it easyly in Perth (WA). Then she started travelling the red continent. During her trip she worked as Workaway for food and accomodation. Cathrin had a one year tourist visa and wanted to travel as far as her money will take her.
She quit her job and appartment and was curious to find out how it feels to travel with no material bonds and no deadline.
I am also curious to visit the huge red continent and it´s relaxed people.
Info: "Travelling with no material bond and deadline turned out to be quite joyful. Instead of one year, after 17 months in Australia I am truly in love with the country and its people. Although I have to leave soon, I am already planning my next trip. Due to Covid-19 I was not able to finalize my trip and I want to come back to travel the west coast of Australia as well as the Simpson Desert.”
Route (so far): I started from Perth (WA) to head south east along the southern coastline. From Norseman I crossed the famous Nullarbor Plain direction west to east to meet friends in the Flinders Ranges. From there, we headed north to meet more friends and visit Uluru / Ayers Rock and some other close by sightseeing spots. With my good friend Brian, with whom I travelled in 2017 already, I continued on to Cairns region. The last few weeks I have been travelling from there down towards Brisbane crisscrossing between the coast and inland areas.

- “After visiting the Horizons Unlimited Meeting in Boonah (near Brisbane) in May 2019 I continued my travels on the eastern half of the Australian Continent. 38.000 kilometers have taken me far in to the Outback, enjoying the desert landscape and remote areas of central Australia. I have been to Tasmania where I had a beer in the southernmost pub of the country and enjoyed the beautiful lush green landscapes after weeks in the dry desert. My friend Brian once again set out to meet me in Victoria after I got back from Tasmania. Our plan to take on the Great Central Road to get to the west coast was, however, cut short when the world started to tumble into the Covid madness. With state borders closing we decided to head back up to North Queensland where Brian lives. Here I have spent the last three month of my trip relaxing, cleaning and repairing my equipment, servecing my bike, doing sports and reading a lot.”
The best (so far): The ever-changing landscape and the cool, very hospitable Aussie people.
The worst (so far): Mosquitoes and flies.
Important useful information for others: Bring a fly hat if you want to visit outback Australia.
Book or publication: We will see.
Earlier experiences: Greece 2004. Italy/Slovenia 2011. Croatia 2012. Romania 2013. Ukraine/Romania 2014 (approx.. 6.000 km). Germany to Mongolia and back in 2017 (ca. 30.000 km).

2022
In the last 2-3 years of Corona in Europe (and the world) practically no long-distance motorcyle-travellers rode overland to India or even Australia. Now there are just a few overlanders "on route". Australia opened his borders for strangers beginning of 2022.
- Because of a lot of time and my age I stopped to summaries overland travels like this below already in 2014 after 44 years.
- We know Ralf already many years. Because he lives close to us in the forest EIFEL in the western part of Germany our friendship grew continually.

Purpose: Cathrin bought a used SUZUKI DR 650 and then started travelling the red continent. Travelling with no material bond and deadline turned out to be quite joyful and instead of one year, after 17 months in Australia she was truly in love with the country and its people. Due to Covid-19 she had to return in July 2020 and was not able to finalize her trip. So in 2023 she went back to travel the north-western parts of Australia and rode another 15.000 km in 6 months.
Info: In 2020 I left my bike at a friends place in Cairns to continue my travels later on. Finally, in 2023 I flew back to Cairns, collected my bike and two friends joined me on a ride to the north-western part of Australia.

Route: From the Atherton Tablelands near Cairns the three of us rode south-west through Queensland, as one of my friends wanted to visit the Painted Desert near Oodnadatta in South Australia. From there, my friend Brian and I continued our trip to Alice Springs and west via the Great Central Road. From Leonora in Western Australia we headed north to visit places such as Mt. Augustus, Karijini National Park and the Kimberley region. Going back to Queensland from the Kimberley´s I worked for two months on a cattle station near Charters Towers before I sold my bike and flew home from Cairns by end of September 2023.
The best: Conquering the rivers of the Gibb River Road and my experience working on a cattle station in Queensland
The worst: Visiting the place where a friend had a fatal motorcycle accident one year before.
Important useful information for others: Enjoy the dirt roads, but always expect the unexpected. Plan very carefully, especially when travelling to remote areas.
Book or publication: None.
Earlier experiences: Greece 2004. Italy/Slovenia 2011. Croatia 2012. Romania 2013. Ukraine/Romania 2014 (approx.. 6.000 km). Germany to Mongolia and back in 2017 (ca. 30.000 km), around Australia 2019/2020 (38.000 km).

11.04.1956: TROVE. I
nfo retrieved from contemporary newspaper reports accessed via TROVE, the Australian National Library's newspaper data base and the recollections of Steve Campbell.
Info: 08.06.2023: Steven Campbells recollections of the Ledgers: We were sitting at the kitchen table when there was a very loud knock on the back door. My father jumped up and exclaimed, "Who the bloody hell's that?" He rushed to the back door. I remember a lot of shouting and noise and then he returned to the kitchen with this couple - the Ledgers. Cecil was a mate of his in London and they had worked together doing house repairs. Cecil had lived in Australia in the 1930s. My Father had no idea that the Ledgers were coming.
They looked very weather beaten. Cecil was of medium build and height and very dark from the sun. Vina was blonde and much younger than him with long straight hair. She was a nurse. They both wore long coats and big boots. They had a tabby cat with them.
They stayed with us for about a week before heading north as they didn't like cold weather.
The highlight for me was being taken for a ride on the back of the bike to get petrol. We went to a garage about 3km away. For a young kid it was a thrilling experience - the wind, the noise, the speed, the smell of the hot engine, the scenery rushing by. I fell in love with motorcycling that day.
The Ledgers ended up in Bundaberg in Queensland  but our family did not keep in touch with them. I remember my Father telling me that when we migrated from England in 1951, Cecil Ledger said to him: "I'll see you in Australia one day." But he didn’t say "It will be a surprise visit"!!!
As far as I know from a records search a man called Cecil St Ledger died in Queensland in 1961 and a woman named Elvina Florence Ledger died in Queensland in 1979.

Hi Bernd. I just discovered your travel research into Europeans and journeys to the east - a fantastic achievement. Here's some more information for you. Cecil Ledger (57) and fis wife Vina (38) rode a Sunbeam 500 and sidecar from London to Melbourne in 1953/54. They rode through Burma presumably on the Stillwell Road from Ledo. They stayed with us in Melbourne for a while. He took me for a ride on the back. It was an unforgettable trip for a 5 year old! I fell in love with motorcycles on that day. I made my first big trip - Singapore to London - in 1973 riding a Honda 450 DOHC twin.
10.06.2023: Summarised Cecli St. Ledger s ride so far. Asked for update.

Overview: Nepal (Kathmandu)> by air to Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur). About Thailand Ralf could not find official information about riding big motorcycles in Thailand. In internet Ralf could only find three years old infomation by travellers. (B.T. Since some years Thailand government does not allow big motorcycles over 250 (?) ccm. You can try to get a special permission in the depatment of interior in advance). So Ralf flew to Malaysia. So Ralf did not choose Thailand (Bangkok) to avoid a stop of his travel.
At the airport in Malaysia, Kuala Lunpur,.he got a visa and the Carnet de Passage was stamped. Ralf bougth additionally an insurance for the mc for Thailand.
> Ralf just rode overland from Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur to the border of Thailand with his big motorcyle. The border-people made no problem and let him pass into Thailand. The Thailand-Visum Ralf got at the border. The carnet was stamped.
To get from THailand into Laos Ralf needed help.
To ride from Laos to Kambodscha was easy. Carnet and Visum at the border.
Ro ride aögain from Kambodscha into Thailand was no problem because the insurance for the mc was still gültig.
> Thailand > Laos > Kambodscha > Thailand > Malaysia > Singapore. To get a visa in ?? there for Indonesia was very easy at the airport online? in Singapore. Ralf sent his motorcycle by a cargo-ship from Singapore (Maysia, Malaka) to Indonesia (Island Sumatra (city Medan). Ralf flew by air with airline ? to Medan for € ? because there is no normal RoRo ferry as it was bebore Corona-time.
10.02.2023: With the help of a facebook-group Ralf became teh tip how to transport his bike by ship from Malaysia to Indonesia. It took him 5 days to get the motorcycle back in the Indonesian island Sumatra in the city Medan.
Ralf lost his handy in a taxi in Sumatra but got it back after one hour!.. Ralfs first impression in Indonesia was like in India. Many peoeple outside. Many people and many vehicles are on the street. It's loud, dusty and the air smells of two-stroke engines. ..
17.02.2023: Ralf rode by motorcyle in Indonesia, Island Sumatra from.City ? Medan to City Sibolga. Ralf kindly tried to reach me by phone. But we missed each other again.

17.02.2023: I sent this hcapter to Ralf by email to overwork it.

27.01.-04.02.2023: No RoRo Ferry in Malakka, maybe in the south of Malaysia? So I drove to Johor Bahru. But also here I couldn’t find a ferry to Sumatra. I was close to Singapore.

27.02. 2023: Ralfs overview about Indonesia: This is my new adventure, Indonesia. It is the largest country in Southeast Asia, the country of 17,000 islands, 250 million inhabitants, diverse cultures, many different ethnic groups. A relatively young country, about my age. In the next two months I will make my way here.

19.04.2023: Ralf managed already solo 40.000 kms until Idonesia/Bali.

08.06.2023. Ralf Plachetka will fly from Indonesia / Bali to Syney/Australia with his bike on his 62nd birthday. Ralf rode all the way before in Indonesia from Island to Island via Bali to Island Timor / East with town Leiste / Chilli. It wass impossible for him to get a transport from there to Darwin/Australia, which was only 700 km distant. So Ralf wrore back all the way to Bali....

8th to 31th June 2023 km 45.000: I ner drove so far on one journey.
Overview from Ralfs route through Australia so far:
01.07.2023. +8°C. Sydney.

27.04.2024 Digi-Vortrag in Malmedy versprochen.

Don’t panic too early!
